The fine print

The rules

Wind and missile rules

Palm Beach County is outside the HVHZ. Its Risk Category II wind map runs from 150 to 170 mph, above the 140 mph mark that puts glass in the wind-borne debris region.

  • Up to 30 feet: the large-missile test of ASTM E1996.
  • Above 30 feet: the small-missile test of the same standard.
  • Each unit needs a Florida Product Approval, or a Miami-Dade NOA, covering its size and design pressure.

Condos and HOAsIsland condos and HOAs
  • A condo board on the island can pick a storm-protection look, then must approve owners who match it.

  • Palm Beach also wants the HOA's signed letter in the permit file.

  • Adopted building standards can waive extra design review.

Sea turtle codeChapter 74 nesting rules
  • The town has its own sea turtle code, Chapter 74, Article II, Division 4, mostly about shielding lights in nesting season.

  • We ask the building office what an ocean-facing opening needs and quote 45% turtle glass where the beach can see it.
