Is it right for you?

Where horizontal roller windows fit, and where they don't

Best for

  • Wide, short openings over a kitchen counter or a sofa
  • Walls facing a pool deck, patio, or walkway
  • Anywhere you can't reach up to lift a sash
  • Very wide openings that suit a three-panel XOX
  • Bedroom escape windows in openings about 48 inches wide or more

Not ideal for

  • Tall, narrow openings, which fit a single-hung or casement better
  • Rooms where you want the whole opening to breathe
  • Bedroom openings under about 48 inches wide, which can't meet the escape rule
  • Sandy spots where nobody will keep the track clean

Pros

  • Wide, unbroken view on low, wide walls
  • Easy to open from the side, with no crank
  • The sash stays inside the frame, so it never swings into a walkway or pool deck

Cons

  • Only one panel (or the two end panels) open
  • Keep the bottom track clear of sand and leaves so it rolls smoothly

The work

What we install

A roller is the easy choice for a wide, short opening. The sash slides sideways on a track, so it's simple to open over a counter and it never swings into a patio or pool deck. The trade-off is airflow: only the sliding panels open. For example, a 53 by 50 inch horizontal roller is about $1,250 installed.

One sash slides left or right on a track. A two-panel roller (XO) has one sliding and one fixed panel. A three-panel roller (XOX) has a fixed center with sliding panels on each end.

A 53×50 horizontal roller is about $1,250 installed (average). Lifetime labor warranty for the original owner. It doesn't transfer if you sell. The estimate is free, and we pull the permit.

Miami-Dade TAS 201/202/203; 175 mph Miami-Dade, 170 mph Broward; large-missile glass below 30 ft.

Condo or HOA? A board can't refuse a conforming impact window: §718.113(5) covers condos and §720.3035(6) covers HOAs. Over $5,000, a recorded notice of commencement is required (§713.135). See Florida approvals and NOAs.

Horizontal roller impact window questions

What is the difference between an XO and an XOX roller?

XO is two panels, one that slides and one that's fixed. XOX is three panels with a fixed center and a sliding panel on each end, so it suits very wide openings and lets air in from both sides. PGT's HR7710A comes in both, and OX is the mirror of XO.

Can both panels slide on an impact horizontal roller?

No. We don't install XX rollers; impact rollers are typically XO/OX or XOX. XO or OX has one fixed and one sliding panel, and XOX has a fixed center and a sliding panel on each end. If you want the whole opening to open, a casement opens fully.

Is a horizontal roller good near a pool?

Yes, a roller is a good fit by a pool because it opens inside its own frame, so nothing swings out over the deck or walkway. Most pool-facing and patio openings we see are rollers or fixed glass, and the sliding sash stays out of the way of furniture and foot traffic.

How do I keep a roller track sliding smoothly?

Vacuum the loose sand and debris out of the sill track, then wipe it with a cloth or sponge and soap and water. That's PGT's own advice for rough-rolling sliders. Lubricate only with what the manufacturer allows, since PGT warns that some silicone aerosol sprays can damage plastic parts.

Why is there water in the bottom track after it rains?

That's normal, because the sill is built to collect water and drain it out through weep holes at the bottom of the frame. PGT says those holes must stay clear and open, because if they're blocked the water can back up into the house. Clear them gently with a soft brush.

Horizontal roller or single-hung: which is better?

Neither is better everywhere; the shape of the opening decides. A roller suits wide, short openings and a single-hung suits tall, narrow ones, and each opens about half of the window in its two-panel form. On our price guide, single-hung is low and rollers are low to mid.

How wide can a horizontal roller impact window be?

Wide. PGT lists its aluminum HR7710A roller at flange sizes up to 76 by 76 inches in two panels and up to 120 by 63 inches in three panels, with design pressures up to +80/-110 psf. The approval for your exact size and county is what decides the final fit.

Can I leave a roller partly open for air?

Yes, with a vent latch. PGT offers an optional vent latch on the HR7710A that lets fresh air in without opening the window all the way, and its low-profile sweep lock shows at a glance when the window is unlocked. Close and lock it fully before a storm.

Can a horizontal roller be a bedroom escape window?

Yes, if the sliding panel opens far enough. Florida code asks for 5.7 square feet of clear opening (5.0 on the ground floor), at least 20 inches wide and 24 inches high, with the sill no higher than 44 inches. In a small opening, a casement is often the only type that meets it.

What size does a horizontal roller need to be to meet egress?

Wide enough that the sliding panel clears 20 inches, which takes about 48 inches of width by PGT's formulas for the two-panel HR7710A. At that width it also needs about 48 inches of height for 5.7 square feet, or about 37 inches at 63 wide. An equal three-panel XOX needs about 72 inches. Exact openings vary by product and approval.

Does a second-floor roller need a window stop?

Often, yes. Florida code requires fall protection on operable windows when the bottom of the opening is less than 24 inches above the floor and more than 72 inches above the ground outside. A window opening control device certified to ASTM F2090 meets it, and PGT offers one on the HR7710A.

Outstanding job! The installation was completed flawlessly. The team was friendly, punctual, efficient. Kept the are clean throughout the installation. We are very satisfied with the results and highly recommend their service.

The republic team was wonderful from the very beginning to the end. It started with Ryan who was consulting us at the start from the windows type and explained everything very throughly and with patience. He helped us choose the best things for us and was able to help us with pricing as well. Over all Ryan helped us with all the information we needed and answered every question we had when we had them. Now after all contracts/paper work was done They said it would take three days for the installation team to finish all the doors and windows. And they did indeed finish in those three days has they said! Yassel from the installation team were even kind enough to to start off with the rooms of our choice. They were very fast polite and kind. They cleaned everything after themselves making sure to leave no rubble behind. They helped us with our windows and our door frames helping us fix everything. Overall they were fantastic. Very helpful, respectful, and kind! They really did go above and beyond and helped us every step of the way. And I would refer them for any installation of windows and doors l. Thank you Republic team!

Had a great experience working with Daniel and the entire team at Republic Windows & Doors. We worked together for almost 3 years, and throughout that time their communication, professionalism, and organization were always excellent. The team was clear, responsive, and easy to collaborate with on every project. It was truly a pleasure working alongside such a dedicated and professional company. Wishing Daniel and the team continued success!

I had an outstanding experience with Republic Windows and Doors. They installed seven impact windows for me, and every step was top-notch. Ryan, the salesman, was extremely professional during his initial visit—he explained everything clearly, from employee insurance to the high-end tools they use, like premium screws and caulking. Then, Matt and Carlos took over the installation, and they were exceptional—they demonstrated an extraordinary level of dedication, precision, and stamina, ensuring every detail was perfect. Their work ethic was truly outstanding, and they took pride in every step of the process. Plus, the pricing was surprisingly affordable for the quality they delivered. I highly recommend them for any window or door project!

From start to finish, the team of Republic Windows, Doors, & Roofing truly exceeded ALL of our expectations! We had 4 companies bid to replace our condo's sliding doors and windows. Their pricing was on the lower end of competitive BUT not the lowest price. From the onset, the interaction we had with their sales manager, Ryan Didato, was terrific. He was on-time, patient, took his time to walk/talk us through everything, explained the process from start-to-finish, and was available to answer calls/questions I had following our initial interaction. He also didn't "hard sell" us AT ALL which I 100%++++ appreciate. He's the definition of a professional and has the patience of a Saint. After signing our contract, their office team including Debbie, Yiseth, and company took care of everything including submission of plans to HOA and the City of Pompano Beach. They continued to keep us informed regarding ordering windows, etc., as our windows and doors are not standard = all custom. Thank you! Next up: installation. Matheus was the lead on our installation working in tandem with Carlos. WOW! Responsible, respectful, and do they know what they are doing!!! They also covered EVERYTHING before starting to help minimize concrete, drywall, and wood dust. Yes...you will still have some but did they ever help alleviate a lot of clean-up work. They also cleaned up when they finished each day. They didn't take break-after-break...they remained focused and steady = they didn't rush. They did it RIGHT! Plus Matheus has an INCREDIBLE play list on his boom-box that we all enjoyed!! To close, I have remodeled 6 different homes/condos here in the greater Fort Lauderdale area including putting in impact windows and doors. This was BY FAR the best experience from start-to-finish I have ever had. And the sliding doors which are really large open and close the smoothest I've ever had! On behalf of my 85 year old father, my 55 year old special needs sister, our fur-baby Dolly...THANK YOU ALL for making this such a positive experience the entire way through. We will 100% recommend you to anyone looking for a reliable, reputable, fair priced company for high quality impact windows and doors! Christopher Tompkins
