Window type

Casement impact windows

A casement impact window is hinged on the side and cranks outward, so the whole sash opens and multi-point locks seal it tight against wind-driven rain. It gives the most airflow and the easiest bedroom escape opening, and a 37×50 casement from Republic is about $1,300 installed (average; size and glass change it).

Is it right for you?

Where casement windows fit, and where they don't

Best for

  • Kitchens over a sink, where a crank beats lifting a sash
  • Bedroom openings under about 48 inches wide and 60 inches tall, where a single-hung or roller can't meet the escape rule
  • Rooms that catch a breeze and need the most airflow
  • Pairing with fixed glass in a window wall

Not ideal for

  • Openings over a walkway, patio, or pool deck, where the sash swings into the path
  • Very wide openings, since one hinged sash has a smaller size limit
  • The tightest budgets, where a single-hung or roller costs less

Pros

  • Opens fully, so it lets in the most air of any type
  • Multi-point locks pull the sash tight to the frame, which seals well against wind-driven rain
  • Easiest way to meet the bedroom escape-opening rule in a small opening

Cons

  • The sash swings outside, so check walkways, patios, and landscaping
  • More hardware than a slider, so it usually costs more

The work

What we install

Casements are the window to pick when a room needs air. The whole sash cranks open, and when you close it the locks pull it tight against the frame. They cost more than sliders because of the hinges and crank (a 37 by 50 inch casement is about $1,300 installed), and they need clear space outside to swing.

The sash is hinged on one side and cranks outward like a door. The whole sash opens.

A 37×50 casement is about $1,300 installed (average). Lifetime labor warranty for the original owner. It doesn't transfer if you sell. The estimate is free, and we pull the permit.

Miami-Dade TAS 201/202/203; 175 mph Miami-Dade, 170 mph Broward; large-missile glass below 30 ft.

Condo or HOA? A board can't refuse a conforming impact window: §718.113(5) covers condos and §720.3035(6) covers HOAs. Over $5,000, a recorded notice of commencement is required (§713.135). See Florida approvals and NOAs.

Casement impact window questions

Why choose a casement impact window?

Pick a casement when you want the most air and the tightest close. The whole sash opens, the multi-point lock pulls it against the frame when it shuts, and a full-opening sash is often the easiest way to meet the bedroom escape size in a small opening.

Why is a casement sometimes the only window that meets egress?

A casement opens fully, while a single-hung or roller opens about half. By PGT's formulas, a 37 by 38 inch single-hung clears about 32 by 13 inches and a two-panel roller about 15 by 31, both short of code, while a casement with the egress hinge clears about 29 by 32, over 6 square feet. Exact openings vary by product.

Do casement windows open over a walkway?

Yes, a casement swings outward, so it takes up space outside the house when it's open. Before we order, we check what's outside each opening, such as walkways, patio furniture, pool decks, and plants, and switch to a roller or fixed glass where a swinging sash would be in the way.

How do I keep casement cranks working in salt air?

Rinse the frame and hardware with a gentle stream of fresh water and wipe them with mild soap, which is what PGT's care guide recommends; it warns against high-pressure spray. For houses near the ocean, ask about PGT's stainless-steel hardware package, which is an option on its CA740 casement.

Is a casement stronger in a hurricane than a single-hung?

Both are impact windows, so the number that matters is the design pressure on the approval for your exact size. In PGT's aluminum line, the CA740 casement is rated up to +90/-130 psf and the SH7700A single-hung up to +80/-110 psf, and the casement locks at several points.

Where does the screen go on a casement window?

Inside. The sash swings out, so the screen sits on the room side of the frame and you crank the window open behind it. PGT's CA740 casement comes with a standard screen, and the mesh options include 1814, 1816, and 2020 in charcoal or gray, plus BetterVue.

Can I clean the outside of a casement from inside the house?

Yes, if you order the washable hinge. PGT's CA740 comes with an egress hinge as standard, and the optional washable or egress-washable hinge lets the open sash slide over so you can reach the outside glass from indoors. It's worth it on second-floor windows.

How big can a casement impact window be?

Smaller than most people expect, because one hinged sash carries the whole wind load. PGT lists its CA740 casement at flange sizes up to 37 by 76 inches or 33-1/2 by 84 inches, so a wide opening usually gets a pair of casements or casements beside fixed glass.

Can casements be combined with fixed glass?

Yes. PGT builds the CA740 casement with a matching fixed picture window, in single, double, or triple units, so a triple can have a casement on each end and fixed glass in the middle. It's a common way to fill a wide wall and still get a breeze.

Should I open my casement windows during a hurricane?

No. Close every casement and turn the handle until it's fully locked before the storm. Impact windows are tested closed and locked, and on a casement the multi-point lock is what holds the sash tight to the frame against wind and rain.

Outstanding job! The installation was completed flawlessly. The team was friendly, punctual, efficient. Kept the are clean throughout the installation. We are very satisfied with the results and highly recommend their service.

The republic team was wonderful from the very beginning to the end. It started with Ryan who was consulting us at the start from the windows type and explained everything very throughly and with patience. He helped us choose the best things for us and was able to help us with pricing as well. Over all Ryan helped us with all the information we needed and answered every question we had when we had them. Now after all contracts/paper work was done They said it would take three days for the installation team to finish all the doors and windows. And they did indeed finish in those three days has they said! Yassel from the installation team were even kind enough to to start off with the rooms of our choice. They were very fast polite and kind. They cleaned everything after themselves making sure to leave no rubble behind. They helped us with our windows and our door frames helping us fix everything. Overall they were fantastic. Very helpful, respectful, and kind! They really did go above and beyond and helped us every step of the way. And I would refer them for any installation of windows and doors l. Thank you Republic team!

Had a great experience working with Daniel and the entire team at Republic Windows & Doors. We worked together for almost 3 years, and throughout that time their communication, professionalism, and organization were always excellent. The team was clear, responsive, and easy to collaborate with on every project. It was truly a pleasure working alongside such a dedicated and professional company. Wishing Daniel and the team continued success!

I had an outstanding experience with Republic Windows and Doors. They installed seven impact windows for me, and every step was top-notch. Ryan, the salesman, was extremely professional during his initial visit—he explained everything clearly, from employee insurance to the high-end tools they use, like premium screws and caulking. Then, Matt and Carlos took over the installation, and they were exceptional—they demonstrated an extraordinary level of dedication, precision, and stamina, ensuring every detail was perfect. Their work ethic was truly outstanding, and they took pride in every step of the process. Plus, the pricing was surprisingly affordable for the quality they delivered. I highly recommend them for any window or door project!

From start to finish, the team of Republic Windows, Doors, & Roofing truly exceeded ALL of our expectations! We had 4 companies bid to replace our condo's sliding doors and windows. Their pricing was on the lower end of competitive BUT not the lowest price. From the onset, the interaction we had with their sales manager, Ryan Didato, was terrific. He was on-time, patient, took his time to walk/talk us through everything, explained the process from start-to-finish, and was available to answer calls/questions I had following our initial interaction. He also didn't "hard sell" us AT ALL which I 100%++++ appreciate. He's the definition of a professional and has the patience of a Saint. After signing our contract, their office team including Debbie, Yiseth, and company took care of everything including submission of plans to HOA and the City of Pompano Beach. They continued to keep us informed regarding ordering windows, etc., as our windows and doors are not standard = all custom. Thank you! Next up: installation. Matheus was the lead on our installation working in tandem with Carlos. WOW! Responsible, respectful, and do they know what they are doing!!! They also covered EVERYTHING before starting to help minimize concrete, drywall, and wood dust. Yes...you will still have some but did they ever help alleviate a lot of clean-up work. They also cleaned up when they finished each day. They didn't take break-after-break...they remained focused and steady = they didn't rush. They did it RIGHT! Plus Matheus has an INCREDIBLE play list on his boom-box that we all enjoyed!! To close, I have remodeled 6 different homes/condos here in the greater Fort Lauderdale area including putting in impact windows and doors. This was BY FAR the best experience from start-to-finish I have ever had. And the sliding doors which are really large open and close the smoothest I've ever had! On behalf of my 85 year old father, my 55 year old special needs sister, our fur-baby Dolly...THANK YOU ALL for making this such a positive experience the entire way through. We will 100% recommend you to anyone looking for a reliable, reputable, fair priced company for high quality impact windows and doors! Christopher Tompkins
