Will impact windows lower my homeowners insurance?
They can. Florida law requires insurers to offer credits for opening protection, and impact windows count on question 9 of form OIR-B1-1802. The credit only applies to the windstorm part of the premium, and your insurer decides the amount. We don't promise a figure.
Do I need to replace every window and door to get the credit?
For the best answer, yes. Question 9 grades the weakest opening. Every glass opening must be protected, and solid entry and garage doors are graded on their own row. One unprotected window puts the house at X.
Does the garage door count?
Yes. The form lists garage doors. A garage door with glass needs impact protection; a solid garage door is checked for a wind-pressure rating such as ANSI/DASMA 108 or 115.
What paperwork does the inspector need?
The permit and passed final, plus a Miami-Dade NOA or an HVHZ-rated Florida Product Approval for each product, and photos or labels for each opening. Without proof, rated products can be marked N (not verified).
Who can do the wind-mitigation inspection, and what does it cost?
State law lists licensed home inspectors with mitigation training, building code inspectors, general, building or residential contractors, engineers and architects. The inspector sets the price. If you qualify for My Safe Florida Home, the program inspection is free.
How long is a wind-mitigation form good for?
Up to five years, as long as no material changes are made to the house and nothing on the form is wrong. New windows are a material change, so get a new form after the install.
Can the My Safe Florida Home grant pay for impact windows and doors?
Yes, if you qualify and the program inspection recommends them. The state pays $2 for every $1 you pay, up to $10,000; low-income homeowners don't have to match. The grant must be approved before work starts.
Is the old wind-mitigation form still valid?
A form from an inspection before April 1, 2026 can still be used during its five-year term. Inspections on or after April 1, 2026 must use the new form, OIR-B1-1802 (Rev. 04/26). Opening protection is question 9 on the new form; it was question 7 on the old one.
