WHAT ARE SINGLE-HUNG IMPACT WINDOWS?

A single hung impact window is a hurricane rated window that has two stacked sashes in one frame. The bottom sash opens by moving vertically, while the upper sash remains fixed. Both sashes are made with laminated impact glass in a reinforced frame, allowing the window to resist windborne debris without the need for shutters or panels.

The bottom sash slides in a balance mechanism built for the weight of the finished sash. The weight associated with that is a function of glass thickness and frame gage, which is why they are specified together instead of independently.

ARE SINGLE-HUNG IMPACT WINDOWS HURRICANE RATED?

Many single-hung impact windows are hurricane rated, but the rating belongs to a specific tested assembly rather than to the style in general. A window is rated as a complete unit: frame, sash, glass, hardware, and anchoring, tested together.

Impact-resistant laminated glass is the starting point. Two glass plies are bonded to an interlayer so that debris striking the window may crack the glass but does not create an opening. Keeping the building envelope sealed is the point. When a window fails during a storm, the pressure change inside the home is what causes most of the structural damage that follows.

Wind pressure is the second half of the test. A window has to hold against both positive pressure pushing in and negative pressure pulling out, cycled repeatedly to simulate a storm’s duration. A product can survive an impact test and still fail a pressure test, which is why both matter.

Product testing is conducted by accredited laboratories against the standards that apply in the jurisdiction. The results are what a manufacturer submits to obtain a product approval.

Approved assemblies are approved as configured. Substituting a different glass thickness, a different lock, or a different frame component can put the unit outside what was tested.

Yes.
